From Skyscrapers to Sand Dunes: Our Perfect Chicago–Lake Michigan Getaway

My youngest teen is obsessed with anything beachy, which is exactly what inspired our most recent fall Midwest road trip. She loves the energy of big cities, and I’m happiest hiking or camping—so this adventure turned out to be the perfect blend for both of us.

We wandered through the vibrant streets of Chicago, soaking in the bustle and bright lights, then slipped away to the quiet beauty of Lake Michigan’s shoreline. Lake Michigan borders Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin and is the third-largest Great Lake—something you feel when you’re standing on those endless sandy shores.

One of our favorite stops was Indiana Dunes National Park on the southern edge of the lake. We hiked the rolling dunes, explored the beach trails, and ended the day feeling sun-kissed, sandy, and fully recharged.
