Cultivating a Positive and Curious AI Mindset in Teaching
In a time when artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly evolving, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or uncertain about its role in education. But here’s the good news: AI is not here to replace teachers—it’s here to support us.
Cultivating a positive and curious AI mindset means viewing these new tools not as threats, but as opportunities. When embraced with curiosity, AI can help reduce the stress and overwhelm that so many of us as educators face. From drafting rubrics and brainstorming learning activities to generating personalized feedback and creating engaging classroom games, AI can be a flexible and time-saving addition to any teacher’s toolbox.
Just like calculators didn’t replace math teachers, AI won’t replace the human relationships, wisdom, and heart that great teaching requires. Instead, it can empower educators to focus more on what matters most—connecting with students, inspiring learning, and staying creative and resilient in the process.
Stay curious. Stay open. Let AI help lighten your load.
Here are three of my favorite these days. Try them out and stay curious!
1. ChatGPT (OpenAI)
Use for: Lesson planning, rubric creation, and differentiation
Ask ChatGPT to generate a short reflection about arubric based on learning standards, brainstorm project ideas, or modify activities for different learning levels and needs.
Example: “Create a rubric for a high school persuasive essay with categories for argument strength, organization, evidence, and grammar.” or “Create 10 project based learning options for high school global foods students to explore the people and food of Latin America. Include 5 vocabulary words per project and instructions plus a rubric for each out of 20 points.'“
2. Canva Magic Write
Use for: Creating visual content and learning materials
Canva’s AI-powered Magic Write can help generate text for newsletters, worksheets, or classroom posters. Paired with Canva’s design tools, it’s great for engaging student materials.
Example: “Write a fun introduction for a worksheet on ecosystems” or “Generate questions for a geography trivia game.”
3. Curipod
Use for: Interactive lessons and formative assessments
Curipod lets teachers create interactive slides and activities (like polls, word clouds, and drawing prompts) powered by AI suggestions.
Example: Inputs a lesson topic (e.g., the water cycle), and Curipod helps generate a slide deck with discussion questions and visual aids.
